The date for my Masters Composition Recital is officially May 3rd at 7:30pm at the Moores School of Music. It will feature many fantastic musicians, including the Aura String Quartet.
I would like to say a big thank you to Allen Chen and Brandon Bell for their three wonderful performances today of my new duo Conversations and to the Da Camera Young Artist Program for commissioning the work! There was a great turnout at the Houston Center for Photography and it was a pleasure to share the program with fellow composers Marcus Maroney, Chapman Welch and Tommy Dougherty.
On January 31, the Houston Museum District will host its "block party" event featuring The Menil Collection, Rothko Chapel and the Houston Center for Photography. As a part of the special programming for that day, Da Camera Young Artists will be performing at all three venues. I am even composing a duo for trumpeter Allen Chen and percussionist Brandon Bell to perform at this event. Check out The Museum Experience for more information.
It's a 1973 New York Times Best Seller by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird. It is also, my newest composition project! I have been commissioned by the Da Camera Young Artist Program and the Galveston Artist Residency to compose a work for the GAR's Spring 2015 exhibition based on this fascinating piece of literature. The program will be in March so stay tuned for more details!
Just got done with the Composers Symposium at the Oregon Bach Festival on the campus of the University of Oregon. I composed a short piano sonatina for the event, which was performed by pianist/conductor/composer Caleb Wenzel from the University of Notre Dame. Chen Yi was the composer-in-residence and she talked masterfully about her career and music. She is a very insightful thinker about music and I really gained a lot from what she shared with us.
