Now in its seventy-third year, the Composers Conference is truly one of the great New Music festivals in America. The quality of the performers and my composer colleagues is exceptional. I am so fortunate and honored to be amongst these incredible musicians, many of whom I have built friendships with that I hope will last many years.
It is a wonderfully busy spring with three world premieres and the culmination of my Literacy Through Music initiative! Upcoming events include...
April 16 at 2:00 PM – Houston Mennonite Church
Literacy Through Music concert featuring the world premiere of Mark Buller's First Words by Teresa Procter (mezzo-soprano) and Stephanie Ng (piano). Reception to follow.
April 19 at 7:30 PM – Moores Opera House
AURA Contemporary Ensemble's concert Evocative. The program includes music by Stephen Lias, Misook Kim, and Jacob TV, as well as the world premieres of David Heuser's Taxi of Midnight, Kyle Rivera's Aborcordina, and my own Sonic City! Check out the promotional video for the concert here.
May 12 at 7:30 PM – Menil Collection, Houston
The final Da Camera Young Artists concert of the season, featuring the world premiere of Imprint, my new work for solo violin. Jae-Won Bang will perform this piece on a wonderfully diverse program that includes music by Beethoven, John Luther Adams, Gershwin, and others. Imprint was commissioned by the Da Camera Young Artist Program and considers the coexistence of two things that we normally think of as separate: nature and machine.
I had so much fun helping out at the Who R U? Halloween Festival at the Menil! There was a huge turnout despite the nasty weather. Danielle Chan and I made spin drums with the kids until our hands hurt!

A copy of my 2013 piece Three Paintings by Clyfford Still will now be held in the archives at the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. How fun!
I am so pleased to be partnering with Literacy Advance of Houston to create a wonderful program that uses music to teach literacy. I am currently working with the experts at Literacy Advance to design a unique six-week course for adult literacy students that focuses on creative writing in musical settings. By the end of this course, students will have completed several works of poetry that will be set to music and performed by Da Camera Young Artists. I couldn't be more grateful to Da Camera for entrusting this project to me and supporting me throughout.
Thank you, Joshua Zinn, for featuring my piece On Plants and Consciousness on Music in the Making! And thank you, Courtenay Vandiver Pereira, for a wonderful performance!
I am happy to announce that I will be partnering this summer with Houston Grand Opera to compose 3-5 songs for their Veterans Songbook project!
I'm so proud and honored to be able to contribute to this wonderful program and to work alongside some extraordinary and inspiring individuals!
Explorations of Plant Conciousness, a sound installation created for the Galveston Artist Residency and commissioned by Da Camera's Young Artist Program is opening Saturday, April 18th from 6:00-9:00pm at the Galveston Artist Residency. Please come check out my work and this wonderful gallery!
Had such a fun and inspirational afternoon/evening with composing legend Sam Adler. Got some very positive feedback from him about the piece that I presented in his masterclass. Then enjoyed his humor and wisdom at dinner. What an amazing human being.
Just got done rehearsing with the extraordinarily talented (and Grammy-nominated) Courtenay Vandiver Pereira. Explorations in Plant Consciousness will be unveiled to the public at the Galveston Artist Residency on April 18th.
